Westchester audiences will delight in the unique performance of syncopated choral works by two much beloved Argentine composers.

Ariel Ramirez’s Navidad Nuestra, which opens the program, is a colorful choral work that has been described as ‘a folk drama of the Nativity based on rhythms and traditions of Hispanic America.’ Its six movements express the Christmas story in a popular South American style.

The engaging Elqui Trio provides backup for the Westchester Chorale in this Ramirez piece, bringing traditional Andean instruments rarely heard in live concert in the lower Hudson Valley, such as the charango, quena, zampogna, and bomba.

The ensuing serenade of Andean folk tunes will be a clever device for demonstrating the history, folklore, and special qualities of these instruments. (Did you know that there are two kinds of charangos, each with its own sound?)

To cap off the evening, the Westchester Chorale bursts into song once again with Indianas, Carlos Guastavino’s lilting collection of six love songs. One of the most recognized and prolific Argentine composers of the 20th century, Guastavino includes texts from popular Argentine poets and incorporates syncopated rhythms with echoes of Andean musical culture, giving the melodies a life of their own.

Taken together, these offerings promise to be delightful new musical discoveries for Westchester audiences.
